Kemono no Souja Erin

anidb - http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=6187

So I have watched 4 episodes so far of this and feeling very indecisive if I want to keep going or not. Each episode so far has been almost, not entirely, self contained but unlike (something like) Mushishi there just isn't much going on. I can imagine this going on for a while considering the pacing so far. On top of that, this is 50 episodes long so that is a major commitment (imho). On the other hand though, I don't really have anything to complain about otherwise, most aspects of the show seem of decent quality although the art style is a little different (and I can be touchy about that sometimes). I'll download and watch maybe up to episodes 10-15 and see what develops since the description very cryptically states "One day however a tragedy happens which changes Erin's life forever. " but nothing like that has happened yet.

So I have now watched through episode 16. The self contained episode thing did not turn out so that was kind of wrong description on my part. The "tragedy" has occurred so the story has taken on a new direction. I have decided halfheartedly to continue watching this until I get bored or finish it. Every one of the tags at anidb associated with this is 100% accurate imho so far. Example: there is slow plot development but every important character is totally fleshed out. Nothing feels rushed, ever. It's sort of nice in a way.

This stayed perfectly accurate all the way through to the end.

Character development is really solid. To give one example, the main character goes from very young to full adult over the course of the series (no spoiler) and you get to see every important step of the way influencing her as she matures. What at first appears to be a very simple story surrounding one, insignificant girl slowly ends up becoming a very large scale story. I hesitate to call it an "epic" story but it is kind of true. This may be controversial but I don't think this series had any truly dedicated filler episodes. Even in the episodes which seemed a bit tangential information would be mentioned/shown that would become important 10-20 episodes later to the main storyline. To not drag this out any longer, even though I think I could write a short article about this series since it was so long, the show was good. Definitely above average. I don't think the pacing, " heart-warming" tone or "slice of fantasy-world life" would be for everyone though so YMMV.
