Things have finally come to a critical junction. Due my academic performance so far and new policies enacted this semester, specifically regarding the repetition of courses, the Admission & Records office has decided the future of my academic career is now at the full discretion of my academic adviser. I require her consent to register for a class(es) next semester that acts as a prerequisite for a large number of classes in my major. I have just sent her an email asking for her permission as sincerely as I could write it.

I am posting this because while I do not expect her to deny me the registration she would be fully within her legal powers to say no which would effectively terminate any chance of me earning a degree in computer engineering and possibly disqualify me from further attending. In the event that this happens it would be impossible for me to keep the matter discreet and you guys would find out eventually so I figure I might as well state what is at stake right now.

Wish me luck.

Best, of luck, not to dishearten you, but I am in somewhat similar of a position, however instead of needing merely my department dean's approval, I would also need the dean of engineering as well, and on top of all that some sort of paper pushing fucktard in the csu building. All of which I have heard don't give a flying fuck and will not consent to bypassing any course repetition. Luckily, it isn't for a core class and so technically I am not totally screwed, I am however fucked out of this next quarter, and as such will not be in school this next quarter.

On the bright side I am taking several steps to get around this issue, through speaking with another department, asking for consent to take a class without the prerequisite and if worse comes to worse registering at FJC this summer for the course that I need.

It seems everyone has gotten the ban hammer in one form or another due to the state budget.

Update: My adviser sent me a form to complete and turn in. This is a step forward, considering she could have just replied with a denial, but I'm not fully out of the woods yet because this form needs to be "approved" too. I'll be turning it in tomorrow. We'll see how that goes.

In final week madness news: I have to pull a 10 page paper out of my ass by Friday analyzing cloud computing as it applies to computer networking at all levels from hardware to software. This is going to be pretty epic. I can smell it.

Ooohhh, sounds like fun! You should definitely talk about the new issues Intel is facing in the HPC sector from the likes of nVidia and ATI. I know I've complained a few times about the sheer number of essays and reports I had to write this quarter, but I've never actually counted how many pages I've written until now and I'm sorta surprised...90 pages of pure and essays reports this quarter.

Definitely. Wonder if I should work in the recent Larrabee stuff haha....

Lots of fun reading but remember to take notes and try to organize your thoughts so it'll be at least semi-productive while you drill through all this fun reading.

I'm going to burn in hell for this paper haha.... I've dedicated like 1 page to netbooks, 1 page to OnLive (as an example of cloud computing going more "mainstream", already mentioned google), 1 page bitching (very scientifically) about our telecoms. 7 more to go!

So I'm on page 6 out of 10 (or 11 if I feel really special) and this paper is almost turning into an analysis of OnLive. Reason being that I cannot find a lot of examples of cloud computing (at the MAINSTREAM level) involving high performance applications that involve the complications of latency&bandwidth. Looking at systems like Google's "applications suite" is not as comparable because latency is not nearly as important when typing text into a word document or spreadsheet.

Also.... this is like a record for me... I just pumped out 3 pages in the last hour... but still more to go... gotta keep it up....

Good news! Passed physics. Was a little worried about that one but seems like they were unwarranted despite not studying for the final.

...also update on this paper... I don't even know where I'm going with it now... I'm at 8 pages and just threw in a graph showing hit rate as compared to increased latency in video games.... before you laugh it is from a study done at the University of Singapore. Serious.

Update on this. Good news and sorta bad news.

My adviser wanted to meet with me in person today and I just got home. She will allow me to continue, good news. The less than good part: she will only allow me to take 1 class per semester until she feels that she can scale it back up to the normal 3-5 classes. The next 2 semesters will be my trial run. If I fail any classes those semesters than that's it, I'm done. She will be checking my class schedule weekly through to the beginning of the semester to ensure I don't try to slip a class past her either. As you can imagine this prolongs my graduation even more than it already is but at least I get to keep going. No I'm not going to change major. I'm too stupidly stubborn to do that wink.gif

Update on this, changes a few things I said previously in this thread....

The form that I turned in went before a committee today. It was denied. I've emailed my adviser to try and see where I can go from here. One option, as I understand it, would be to take some of the equivalent classes that I need (math) offered at Fullerton JC and transfer those units to CSUF and then move forward. I'll have to wait and see what my adviser says (waiting on email back).

Sat down and looked over some course material, I technically have 14 more classes (not counting two bundled labs) until I would be finished with my degree (ie. graduate). Now if there only wasn't a super heavy overlap of prerequisites.

By my super senior powers combined!.....

I hate school so much. That is all. No I'm not going to go in to detail so don't ask or 20-question about it.

I will get my degree in Computer Engineering eventually. That is all that I feel comfortable saying for now.

This is still true.

This, however, is still true too.

As for math....Fullerton Math is...definitely harder and more thorough. I was getting B's and A's @ Cal Poly math while B's, C's and W's @ Fullerton College..... I will definitely say my teachers at Fullerton College cared a LOT more and in general FAR better...and many of my classes were more difficult, but I definitely learned my stuff @ FJC. I would highly recommend trying a FJC course.

I can now say this accurately reflected my experience at FJC.

Random trivia: I've done all the physics my degree requires but while looking around for something on the physics homepage I stumbled across the fact that I could take 2-3 more class (9 units worth) and have a minor in physics. That is kinda cool. I'll worry about it when I actually get close to graduation but I will keep it in mind. I've always enjoyed my physics classes and always done well too (never failed one and never "just barely" passed either).

My semester started out pretty cool but in a mere 3 days is already turning to shit fast.

First I had a class canceled for whatever reason. I was really happy to get into this class because it was a high level engineering seminar class which I need to graduate so easy A, it is also very popular so it usually fills fast but no it was canceled.

Second, I had to drop one class because it was an error that my transcripts said that I needed this class when I actually did not. I had taken its equivalent last semester. After bringing it to the attention of my department that this class seemed oddly familiar, they said there was no reason for me to take the class and they would fix the transcript error.

Third, since I brought their attention to my transcripts, they noticed that I was attempting to take a class without one of the prerequisites so I have to meet with them to discuss it which pretty much means they will make me drop it. If I had never mentioned it, nobody would have said anything so that is just fantastic.

Therefore it pretty much boils down to I enrolled in 4 classes but at this rate will end up with only 1 and I hope they don't decide on some other punishment for me trying to slip by on the one other class. It isn't like I have already struggling enough in this damn school. I hate school so much. I just feel like I can't win. I have made so little progress in the last 2 years being part-time student almost every semester, repeating classes, fuck this shit so hard. I'm trying to. I'm not fucking around on the weekends partying, I don't even play any games during the week. Just so mad right now.

Holy fuckin shit. Pretty much a goddam miracle. After some very sensitive emailing my department is going to let me stay in the class. This decision came all the way down from the Associate Dean of my college (who also is my adviser and department head). She will be watching like a hawk though so it's either pass the class with good grade or kill yourself, old style.
